Samsung Electronics today announced that it has started mass producing 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM chips using its 20nm process technology. Samsung thus became the first company to mass produce such chips. Samsung itself noted in its press release, this will allow the creation of smartphones with 6GB of RAM. Samsung’s LPDDR4 chips are expected to significantly accelerate the adoption of high capacity mobile DRAM worldwide. The 12Gb LPDDR4 will bring largest capacity and highest speed available for a DRAM chip, while offering excellent energy efficiency, reliability and ease of design – all essential to developing next-generation mobile devices. According to Samsung, the new 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM chips version will be 30 percent faster at 4,266 megabits per second (Mbps) than the current 8Gb chips which are used in many 4GB smartphones. They are also twice as fast as latest DDR4 DRAM used in the PCs, while consuming 20 percent less energy, which should have a notable impact on device battery life. Samsung says that future flagships will come with 6GB of RAM, which will allow for “seamless multitasking and maximum performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments”.
